Attacking the net

Lead Summary

New Hampton junior Lauren Frerichs didn’t think her volleyball team was rusty Tuesday night after a week layoff, but coach Jess Geerts thought they were.    The two did agree on one thing — after the Chickasaws won 3-0 over Decorah — that a key to the night was keeping Decorah on the defensive.    “We were keeping them out of system so they weren’t able to get a good pass,” said Frerichs. “We took advantage of the free balls they gave us and our serve receive was pretty solid.”    That made her job a lot easier, as the setter provided 29 assists and the NH girls knocked down 38 kills, more that twice the number for the Vikings at 16. New Hampton was also up a wide margin in the kill efficiency category, with a .384 compared to .049 for Decorah.    Currently Frerichs is the conference leader in assists per set at 9.26 per game.
