Fye, Glaser, Day all win final matches as NH/TV moves into second at state
Three New Hampton/Turkey Valley seniors capped their stellar careers with victories and helped the Chickasaws move into second place at the Class 2A state wrestling tournament Saturday.
Noah Fye became just the second four-time placewinner in school history when he beat Clarion-Goldfield-Dows' Tanner Abbas 6-4 to finish third at 145.
"Noah Hopp talked to us a couple of weeks ago, and he said you'll never forget your last match so make it count," said Fye, who finished third as a freshman, fifth as a sophomore and sixth as a junior. "I obviously wanted to win it all, but I had to do what I could for the team."
Classmate Noah Glaser came all the way back from an opening-round loss and beat Mt. Vernon's Paul Ryan 3-1 to take third at 170 while Areon Day beat Lake Stahlberg of Monticello 9-2 to finish seventh at 220.
Meanwhile, NH/TV sophomore Evan Rosonke finished eighth at 182.
The 5-1 session pushed the Chickasaws into second place with 76 points.
Dubuque Wahlert leads the team race with 84 points while NH/TV is five points ahead of third-place South Tama and seven points in front of fourth-place Ballard.
NH/TV's Michael Blockhus is the lone Chickasaw in Saturday night's final as he is seeking a third individual title.
