Down 9-0 heading into the fourth quarter, New Hampton's football season was teetering on the brink Friday night.But the Chickasaws rallied for 15 final frame points on their way to a 15-9 victory over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in a Class 2A, District 2 game. The win propelled New Hampton to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in district play and, coupled with Crestwood's 27-6 win over Clear Lake, clinched a playoff berth for the Chickasaws.Keaton Geerts' 20-yard scoring run and an Oscar Gaytan extra point cut the lead to 9-7 with 10:34 left.New Hampton came up with two big sacks — one by Kam Pfaffle and Noah Fenske and the other by Josh Fenske — on the Cardinals' ensuing possession and got the ball back with about six minutes to go.Facing a fourth-and-7, Carter Stochl heaved a throw to Ryan Gorman, who made a spectacular catch for a 39-yard gain. Five plays later, Stochl scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and Fenske added a two-point run to put the Chickasaws up 15-9 with 3:10 left.Another Pfaffle sack and a Gaytan interception sealed the win for New Hampton, which closes its regular season with a home game against Clear Lake next Friday.
