Chickasaws romp in 3A region softball opener

Lead Summary

North Fayette Valley picked its poison, and it turned out it was an eighth-grader from New Hampton.
Jenna Herren went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs after the TigerHawks intentionally walked the Chickasaws’ leading hitter, Kacey Olson, as the Chickasaws rolled to a 12-0 win in the opening round of Class 3A regional play Wednesday.
The Chickasaws had plenty of heroes in the four inning game. Kiersten Tenge got a shutout in the pitcher’s circle, the defense was stellar and Rachel Rinken ended the game with a two-run triple in the fourth inning.
The play of the night, though, came early in the game as centerfielder Michaela Fitzgerald picked up a ball at the fence, fired a strike to shortstop Kandice Eggerichs, who relayed the ball to catcher Alexa Wemark and Wemark put the tag on a North Fayette Valley runner Chloe Yauslin to keep the TigerHawks off the scoreboard.
New Hampton snapped a four-game losing skid and improved to 6-7. The Chickasaws will play unbeaten and 11th-ranked Crestwood, a 7-1 winner over Waukon, in the regional semifinals at Cresco on Friday.
