Chickasaws rout field at Riceville’s Cat Duals

Lead Summary

New Hampton/Turkey Valley’s wrestling team got more than just four relatively easy dual wins on Saturday at the Cat Duals in Riceville, a tournament the Chickasaws hopped into after the Ankeny Duals were cancelled because of Friday’s winter storm.
Not only did the Chickasaws dominate Waukon, Riceville, Tripoli and Central Elkader — outscoring them by a combined 254-31 — but they also got a weigh-in and plenty of bonding time.
“I really didn’t want to go without a weigh-in,” New Hampton/Turkey Valley coach Nick Hemann said, “and yeah, you know we spend every Saturday together, so I think it was important that we found a tournament just to be together. It gets real now, so this was good for us.”
And although New Hampton/Turkey Valley, which finished the regular season with a 22-11 dual mark, received 29 forfeits over the course of the four meets, Hemann saw plenty of positives when the Chickasaws were on the mat.
“We got some kids some mat time and that’s always good,” he said. “We’ve come a long ways since Christmas, and I like where we’re at right now.”
Results of the tourney may be found in the Jan. 22 Tribune.
