Farewell, coach

Lead Summary

Even with a couple of days to digest the news, the words came hard to Nate Steege as he talked about “coach.”
Then again, Steve Staker touched a lot of lives in his long teaching and coaching career at both Fredericksburg High School and Coe College. Just ask Steege, a 1998 graduate of Fredericksburg High School and a successful boys basketball coach in his own right at Waverly-Shell Rock.
“I looked up to him … it’s because of coach that this is what I wanted to do,” Steege said last week after Staker lost a short but courageous battle with cancer, passing away at the age of 76 on Tuesday. “He inspired me to be a coach and teach, and honestly, I modeled my life after him. Kids who grew up in Fredericksburg had some really good ones, and coach Staker was right up there.”
