Field now set for November election

Lead Summary

Steve Geerts put it simply: He wants to see some projects through completion and isn’t ready to give up his seat on the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors. So he wasn’t ready to let a loss in the Republican primary this past June keep his name off the November ballot. And now, it’s official: Geerts, who won election to the board in 2012 as a Republican, will be the Democratic standard bearer this fall in the District 4 race.“I feel like we’re doing a lot of good things right now for the county,” Geerts said, “and I’ve always voted for what’s best for the county, not the party.”Ron Underwood won a three-way race in the June primary, and Geerts contemplated a run as an independent before Democrats held a special convention on Aug. 16. After retiring District 3 Supervisor John Andersen and County Attorney Pat Wegman spoke on behalf, party members nominated Geerts. The party didn’t have any candidates file for the primary election, which meant if an independent didn’t turn in nomination papers or the Democrats hadn’t held a special convention, Underwood would have been the lone name on the ballot. For the complete story see the 09/02/2016 New Hampton Tribune.
