George A. Manson dies at 80

George A. Manson, 80, of Marion, died Mar. 6, 2017 of multiple myeloma in St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. At George’s request, there will be no services. Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion is in charge of cremation. George was born on Nov. 24, 1936 in Independence, to Arthur and Elsie Otdoerfer Manson. He graduated from Independence High School in 1955. George joined the Navy in 1956 and served two years aboard ship in the Mediterranean and five years in the Navy reserves. On Dec. 31, 1960, George and Claudia King were married at the Buck Creek Methodist Church in rural Delaware County. In 1962, George began work as assistant manager at Trowbridge Department Store in Charles City. For 30 years from 1967 to 1997, George and Claudia owned and operated Manson Shoes in New Hampton and nine years in Charles City while living 39 years in rural Floyd County. In 2001, they moved to Marion, where George enjoyed his neighbors and lunch trips to many small towns near and far. George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Claudia; son, John (Lori) of Anamosa and daughter,Jill Henry (Doug Wright) of Charles City. His parents; brother Duane; sister-in-law Evelyn; and son-in- law Robert Henry preceded him in death.
