Hopp ends collegiate career as all-American

One goal — becoming an all-American — was already accomplished, but as Upper Iowa’s Logan Hopp took to the mat one final time Saturday, he wasn’t satisfied.  “I wanted to go out on a high note,” the former New Hampton High School star said. “I wasn’t going to lose, that was kind of my mindset going into that match.”  He didn’t, and the Peacock heavyweight capped a standout collegiate wrestling career with a 5-3 win over Nick Budd of Gannon University to finish fifth at the NCAA Division II national tournament.  “It meant a lot to me,” Hopp said. “It was kind of a crazy day. I found out that I had made academic all-American and that probably meant more to me than anything else, but I still wanted to go out with a win.”  Although Hopp technically is a redshirt junior, he all but said that his wrestling career would end with the national tournament in Birmingham, Ala.  More on the story may be found in the March 14 Tribune.
