Huskies throw Newman a scare

Lead Summary

Nashua-Plainfield’s record may just be 6-7, but the Huskies may be the last team anyone wants to see when the playoffs begin next week.
The Huskies, after all, have taken some giant strides this season, and although they’ve yet to topple one of the Top of Iowa East Division powerhouses, they’re definitely knocking at the door.
Take last Tuesday, for example, when the Huskies gave 12-2 Mason City Newman Catholic a battle before falling 78-72 after battling back from a 12-point halftime deficit.
“We came out [the second half] and were super aggressive with our defense,” said coach Sam Brown, whose team lost to Newman by 30 points before Christmas. “We kept whittling the score down little by little … and I believe if we played a game with five periods, we would have won that game.”
The Huskies were led by sophomore Austin Bienemann, who scored 23 points, but it was the play of Luke Cerwinske that really caught Brown’s attention as the senior finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
