Margaret "Peggy" Pagel dies at 84
Margaret "Peggy" Pagel, 84, of Sumner, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017, at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner. Burial will be held at Union Methodist Cemetery, rural Sumner.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.
Margaret Mary (Brummond) Pagel was born on May 5, 1933 in rural Lawler. She was the daughter of Lawrence Julius Brummond and Adeline Elizabeth (Hackman) Brummond. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reilly Ridge, rural Chickasaw County.
At the age of seven, her father died. After his death, the family moved from New Hampton, living for a time in Lawler, Winona, Minn. and Ionia. Her mother married Robert J. Shinstine when Peggy was nine years old. He was stationed with the Army Air Corp at Pinellas Air Field, St. Petersburg, Fla. The family moved to St. Petersburg in 1944 and lived there until the end of World War II. They returned to Iowa, making their home in New Hampton, where Peggy attended St. Mary's School and the New Hampton High School, graduating in 1951. While in high school, she was employed at the Fireman's Theatre, selling tickets.
After graduation, Peggy was employed in the offices at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo for a short time, then worked in the Chickasaw County Treasurer's Office until her marriage to Duane Pagel on June 25, 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton. After their marriage, Peggy and Duane resided in rural Sumner.
Peggy belonged to Immaculate Conception Church in Sumner and its Rosary Society. Peggy and Duane belonged to a neighborhood card club for many years. Peggy enjoyed playing cards with her sisters, grandchildren and neighbors, especially canasta, 65 and golf card games. She had a love for music and had a beautiful angelic voice and adored so many people and had a very soft and tender heart. Nieces and Nephews meant the world to her.
She will always be remembered for open door policy for family, friends and neighbors. The coffee pot was always on at the Pagel home and many area farmers stopped by for a cup of coffee to both conduct business with Duane and Peggy in their feed and seed business and to visit. Peggy always made room for one more person at the table when they stopped by at meal time. She was known for adding an extra "shot" of fortitude in her coffee she served to the office clients during the winter months.
Peggy was a loving and caring person. Her faith in God helped her through any difficult times she faced. She loved her family and being with them. Peggy helped support her husband in the feed and seed business and farming operations, including dairy cows and exotic animals. Especially helped raise a pair of baby bear cubs from birth to full grown.
She loved her grandchildren, attending their activities and was known to always be fifteen minutes early. Peggy enjoyed her flowers and took pride in her garden. She also loved watching her birds outside her kitchen window.
Survivors include three daughters: Barbara (Everett) Hyman of Sumner, Brenda (Roger) Warnke of Sumner, and Susan (Brian) Moulds of Dunkerton; one son: Rick (Theresa) Pagel of Sumner; one daughter-in-law: Jane Pagel of Westgate; sixteen grandchildren: Lacey (Josh), Jesse and Alex Pagel; Mark (Crystal) and Max (Jessie) Hyman; Justin (Val) and Nick (Beth) Warnke; Hunter, Hannah and Harrison Pagel; Abbey, Nate and Faith Miller; and Tyler, Riley and Brady Moulds; six great-grandchildren: Shane, Dillion and Emily Warnke, Heleana'Maria Hyman, Laura'Rae and Jonathan Wirkler; three sisters: Melva Jean Thompson of Des Moines, Elaine (Chuck) Denner of New Hampton, Camilla (Don) Conway of Cresco; one brother: Nick Shinstine of Waterloo and one sister-in-law: Geri Brummond of New Hampton.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Duane in 1997; two sons: Douglas in 2003 and David in 1968; two grandsons: Timothy Hyman in 1987 and Heston Pagel in 2003; her parents; her step-father; and a brother: LaVern Brummond.
The S. K. Rogers Funeral Home, Sumner, is in charge of arrangements.
