Leaping into history!

Lead Summary

When Cory McDonald took over as head coach of the New Hampton baseball program in 2009, he told his five seniors at the time — Matt Samec, Garrett Shekleton, Ryan Kramer, Tanner Weigel and Blayne Willadsen — that the Chickasaws were going to play at Principal Park.
Now, 10 years later, for the first time in school history, New Hampton made the trip to Des Moines to compete in the Class 2A state tournament.
“It took us a long time, but we finally did it. It was a lot of work. That’s why it feels so good. Nothing was given. This is a program that had three winning seasons in 20 years, 10 consecutive losing seasons until 2009,” McDonald said. “These boys, our community, this program has earned this. Through sheer hard work and determination, it’s the way it should be for New Hampton. That’s why I’m so proud. Nothing was given to us.”
