New Hampton rolls into the playoffs

New Hampton spotted Clear Lake an early 6-0 lead but put together a dominating second half on its way to a 22-6 victory over the Lions in the final game of the regular season.The Chickasaws took the lead for good when Keaton Geerts found a huge hole and raced 45 yards into the end zone. Oscar Gaytan added the extra point and New Hampton led 7-6 with 31 seconds left in the first frame.Still, it was anyone's game at halftime, but New Hampton controlled the ball for more than 18 minutes of the second half. A Geerts 6-yard touchdown run and his subsequent 2-point run gave New Hampton a 15-6 lead with 6:53 left in the third, and the diminutive senior added a 4-yard run and Gaytan's kick made it 22-6 with 3:16 left in the third quarter.New Hampton improved to 8-1 overall and finished the Class 2A, District 2 schedule with a 6-1 mark.The Chickasaws will play in a playoff game next Friday and will find out its opponent on Saturday morning.— For more on this story, see the Oct. 25 Tribune
