No wins but progress for Chickasaw softball

Lead Summary

It may sound weird, but New Hampton softball coach Lisa Rude had a point.
Yes, the Chickasaws had their first winless week in the abbreviated regular season, and yes, New Hampton played its best softball of 2020 in a week in which Decorah beat the Chickasaws 5-3 and conference champion Crestwood earned a 6-1 win over New Hampton.
“There were a lot of positives, and I really believe we’re making progress,” Rude said after her team fell to 5-6 overall and 5-6 in the NEIC with the loss to the Class 3A 12th-ranked Cadets.
“One bad inning cost us against Decorah, and I hate whining about the umpiring but let’s just say I wasn’t very happy. And you know, that Crestwood game is a 3-1 game in my mind.”
The Chickasaws closed out the regular season against Class 4A fifth-ranked Charles City on Monday night and now are preparing for a first-round Class 3A regional game against North Fayette Valley that is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Cresco.
The winner of that game will face either Crestwood or Waukon on Friday in the regional semifinals in Cresco.
