Roy William Bierschenk dies at 82

Roy William Bierschenk age 82 of Nashua, died Friday Oct. 30, 2015, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Nov. 3, 2015, at St. John's United Church of Christ - Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua with burial in the church cemetery. Military interment rites will be conducted by the Nashua VFW Post.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Monday Nov. 2, 2015, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Online condolences for Roy's family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com
Roy William Bierschenk was born Oct. 1, 1933 in rural Nashua, the son of William and Martha (Schroeder) Bierschenk. Roy attended rural country school through eighth grade and then attended Nashua High School, graduating in 1952. Shortly after graduation he was drafted into the United States Army and served two years at Fort Carson in Colorado. On Dec. 29, 1956, Roy went on a blind date and met the love of his life, Dorothy Sweazey. The couple were married on Nov. 9, 1957 at the First Baptist Church in Austin, Minn. To this union six children were born.
After returning from their honeymoon, they moved to the family farm and began their life farming side by side. In addition to farming, Roy was a Vigortone feed dealer. They shared many memories together on the farm including raising beef cattle, hogs and tending their crops.
Traveling was always a great pleasure for Roy. He also enjoyed boating with his family on Clear Lake and going on fishing trips, especially to Lake Kabetogama in Minnesota. Roy was a great dancer and taught all of his daughters how to dance. He was a lifetime member of St. John’s United Church of Christ - Pleasant Hill, Rural Nashua. Roy helped organize the Iowa Cattle Marketing Co-op and served as first president of the organization. He was a member of the Floyd County Hospital Board and a member of the Floyd County Cattlemen Association.
Roy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; one son, Brian (Ruth) Bierschenk of Nashua; four daughters, Julie (Rick) DeVries of Forest City, Nancy (Lee) Vaale of Oakland, Minn., Jayne (David) Abraham-Schmitz of Nevada, and Rachel (Tom) Urban of Ankeny; one honorary son, Michael (Sherry) Buttjer of Plainfield; eleven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (Tom) Wilson of Detriot, MI; one brother-in-law, Clayton Borg of Tucson, Ariz; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kent in infancy; one brother Edwin; two sisters, Lois Scoles and Marian Borg.
