Smith hopes to make one last hoops run

Lead Summary

As the bus made its way from Pella to Storm Lake on Tuesday, the “this-could-be-it” thought crossed Kyle Smith’s mind.
A Central loss would mean the former New Hampton High School’s star basketball career would be over.
“Honestly, I did think about it a little bit,” he said, “and then I kept thinking, no way, man. I just wanted one more chance, one more opportunity. I thought about that more than it being my last game.”
And thanks in part to another huge game from Smith, he and his teammates marched on as the sixth-seeded Dutch beat third-seed Buena Vista 84-70 to advance in the Iowa Conference tournament.
In the process, Smith added another school record as he broke the all-time single-season school record for 3-pointers made.
