Opening night victory

Lead Summary

It wasn’t always pretty, but then again, the goal — win the season opener — was accomplished for the New Hampton volleyball team.“We definitely found some things to work on and it might have been a little ugly in spots,” coach Jess Geerts said after her team swept Nashua-Plainfield 25-18, 25-13, 25-16 Tuesday night. “The goal, though, was to win. We did that and we’ll take it.”Both teams came into the 2016 season opener knowing they had some big holes to replace, but New Hampton got big matches from its veterans and valuable contributions from its newcomers.“I have to remember we have a lot of new girls,” she said, “and I think a lot of them had their moments. Consistency, that’s what we need to work on.”New Hampton overcame a sluggish start that saw the Chickasaws clinging to a 19-18 lead before they closed the first game out with a 6-0 run that was highlighted by three service aces from Kayla Gilbert.More on the story may be found in the Aug. 26 Tribune.
