Patience pays off

Lead Summary

The word of the day on Friday for the New Hampton boys basketball team was patience.
And it paid off for the Chickasaws, who survived a slow start to roll to their biggest Northeast Iowa Conference victory of the season.
“We knew against Charles City that we probably rushed some shots,” senior guard Tristan Sweitzer said after New Hampton rolled past Waukon 66-40, “so the coaches really emphasized to us that we had to be patient, we had to get good shots and I think we did that tonight better than any other game we’ve played this year.”
Waukon came into the game without an NEIC win, but in four of those five conference losses, Waukon had been in games until the very end and they had beaten North Fayette Valley, a squad that handed New Hampton a loss, by 33 points earlier in the week.
“I’m going to tell you this much, we respected them,” New Hampton coach Ryan Rausch said. “They’re like every other team in our league. They can beat anybody.”
