Rev. Marvin C. Salz, age 81 of New Hampton, IA, died Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville, IA
A public ‘rolling’ visitation will be held 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, May at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home and Crematory in New Hampton. Attendants will be limited to numbers that adhere to State of Iowa guidelines. Those attending are asked to wear a mask. If so desired, memorials may be given to Holy Family Parish or the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Rev. Marvin Charles Salz was born on the Salz family farm near Little Cedar, IA, on September 25, 1938. He was the son of Peter and Dora (Vogel) Salz. He received his education in Stacyville and was a 1956 graduate of the Stacyville High School. He graduated from Loras College in 1960 and Mt. St. Bernard Seminary in 1964. Father was ordained on May 30, 1964 by Bishop James J. Byrne. On the following day he held his first Mass at Visitation Church, Stacyville.
Father Salz served as an associate pastor of Sacred Heart in Osage, 1964; Sacred Heart in Oelwein, 1964-1969; and Holy Family in Mason City, 1969-1975. He served in Team Ministry in Mason City, 1972-1975 where he also taught at Newman High School. He was associate pastor of St. Mary’s in Cascade, 1975-1979, while also teaching at Aquin High School, and serviced as director of Aquin religious education, 1976-1979. He was associate pastor of St. Jude’s in Cedar Rapids, while also teaching at LaSalle High School, 1979-1983. He was associate pastor of St. Mary’s in Manchester and co-director of St. Paul’s School of Religion, 1983-1985.
He served his first pastorate, Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina, 1985-1987, while also serving as coordinator of the Christian Family School of Religion in Calmar, 1985-1990. Father Salz served as pastor of St. Francis de Sales in Ossian, 1987-1990; St. Stephen’s in Central City, and St. Isidore’s in Springville, 1990-1993; St. Mary’s in New Hampton 1993-2000, while serving as executive coordinator/director of St. John School of Religion in New Hampton. He was pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Lawler, 1996-2008, and St. Luke’s in St. Lucas and St. Mary’s in Waucoma, 2000-2008; and dean of the Decorah Deanery, 2007-2013. He had also been sacramental priest of Christ Our Hope Cluster retiring on July 8, 2014.
Survivors include four brothers, Leo (Phyllis) Salz of East Chain, MN, Edward Salz of Osage, IA, Roman (Vivian) Salz of Rochester, MN, Wilmer (Mary Ann) Salz of Mesa, AZ; two sisters, Roma Hemann of Osage, Catherine (Alvin) Schutta of St. Michael, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ambrose Salz; sister, Monica Halbach; brothers-in-law, Donald Hemann, Harry Hemann and Jerome Halbach; sister-in-law, Marge Salz; nieces and nephews, Matthew Schutta, Kenny Halbach, Angie (Halbach) Krueger, Therese (Durben) Halbach.
