South Winneshiek sweeps UIC cross country titles

Lead Summary

Jordon Snyder’s goals weren’t set quite high enough at the start of the cross country season. He thought he could get fifth in the Upper Iowa Conference boys race, but he was the runner-up in last Thursday’s meet.    Now his goals are lofty, but they’re mostly team goals.    “We want to finish in the top three at the state qualifying meet,” said the Turkey Valley junior. “Then at state hopefully we can mix it up with some teams that are suppose to be better than us. We’d like to surprise some teams at state.”    Both the South Winneshiek boys and girls won their UIC titles Thursday. Snyder was the lone Trojan runner for the varsity boys and was joined as an all-conference runner by Shelby Reicks, who ran sixth for the girls.    Snyder edged out his teammate and 2015 state qualifier Derek Dietzenbach for second place.    “I caught up with Derek about a mile, mile and a half into the race and I could tell he wasn’t feeling the best. It was a bad day for him.”    Snyder tied his personal record time which he just set a week ago at North Linn. There he finished two seconds ahead of teammate Paxten DeVilbiss and Starmont’s Mitchell Hayes. But at the UIC he distanced himself from those runners by 20 to 30 seconds.  For the rest of the Turkey Valley/South Winn results, please see the Oct. 18 Tribune.
