Two traditional Turkey Valley wrestling names — Reicks and Meirick — were among the champions crowned at the South Winn wrestling tournament last weekend. Tom Reicks won the title at 113, while Riley Meirick took first at 138. The Trojans were fourth at the eight-team tourney, which included 2A, eighth-ranked Denver-Tripoli.
“We had a fairly good tournament,” said coach Steve Andrukaitis. “Last year we had very few placewinners at this meet. This year all ten guys that we brought to the meet placed in the top five. I believe this is a sign we are heading in the right direction.”
Reicks and Meirick each won their first varsity tournaments. Reicks used three falls on his way to the title, pushing his record for the season to 9-4. “Tom was very dominant, while Riley took the much harder way of winning matches by going into the third level of overtime in the semis, and second level of OT in the finals,” recalled the coach.
Meiricks’s plans for overtime in the final match didn’t quite pan out. “I was worried I was going to be dead from the overtime in the semis, so I thought I’d take shots and get it over quick,” he said.
