After coming off the bench for two years, Smith enjoying fast start to junior year at Central College

Kyle Smith’s gregarious personality came through loud and clear during the phone interview last week.  Granted, the former New Hampton High School basketball star has a lot to be thankful for as he has helped the Central College basketball team get off to a quick 4-0 start this season.  “It’s fun, way fun,” the college junior said, “and even though we kind of had high expectations, we’ve embraced them.”  The Dutch are coming off a season in which they claimed the Iowa Conference tournament championship and a bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament, and they are the preseason pick to repeat as league champs.  Smith is a big part of the Central equation, too.  After seeing extensive playing time as a freshman, Smith settled into a “sixth-man” role a year ago and averaged 11.2 points a game.  For the full story, please see the Nov. 29 Tribune.
