New Hampton quarterback Carter Stochl threw two touchdown passes in Friday night's win over Waukon.

Chickasaws rally to beat Waukon in ranked battle

New Hampton improves to 2-0 with 21-20 victory

The game lived up to its hype and then some, but when it was over Friday night, Class 2A fifth-ranked New Hampton had a 21-20 win over sixth-ranked Waukon. It may have been an early September, non-district game, but save for the temperature, it felt like a November playoff atmosphere.New Hampton rallied from a 20-14 halftime deficit and took the lead on a Carter Stochl-to-Ryan Gorman 18-yard scoring pass and Oscar Gaytan extra point with 1:15 left in the third quarter.Waukon spent much of the fourth quarter in New Hampton territory, but the Chickasaws got interceptions from Ryan Gorman, Carter Stochl and Keegan Tenge to thwart three drives and improve to 2-0.The Chickasaws took a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter on a Tristan Sweitzer 2-yard touchdown run. After Waukon tied it, Stochl found Tenge on a 45-yard touchdown pass and then hit Gorman for a two-point conversion to put New Hampton up 14-6 with 5:02 remaining in the first half. The Indians, though, scored two touchdowns in the final 1:55 of the second quarter — including a 40-yard scoring pass on the final play of the half — to go into the locker room with a 20-14 lead.“Our defense really came through in the second half,” coach Scott Frerichs said. “To pitch a shut out in the second half showed how tough our kids can be.”New Hampton will open Class 2A, District 2 play next Friday when it hosts Forest City, which is 1-1 after falling to Class 3A Spirit Lake.
