It took just under a minute for Keaton Geerts to pin Blake Ryerson of Winterset in the first round of the state tourney Thursday. Geerts, along with four other Chickasaw wrestlers, will compete in tonight’s semifinal round that starts at 8:45.

Chickasaws send five into semifinals

New Hampton put together a brilliant performance in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state wrestling tournament Friday afternoon.  Michael Millage at 126 and Noah Fye at 132 scored major decisions to get the Chickasaws off to a strong start. Keaton Geerts, who won a state title at 132 last year, followed with a pin at the buzzer at 138.  Ryan Gorman gave New Hampton more bonus - the Chickasaws got six of them in the round - with a second-period pin at 160 and Noah Glaser kept New Hampton perfect with a 6-5 win at 170.  The lone Chickasaw not to make it out of the quarterfinal round was Noah Hopp, who was pinned by Davenport Assumption's Noah Broderson, the state's top-ranked wrestler at 220.  New Hampton moved into second place in the team standings with the 5-1 round. Solon leads the tournament with 51.5 points, 2.5 more than the Chickasaws.  The lone Chickasaw not to make it out of the quarterfinal round was Noah Hopp, who was pinned by Davenport Assumption's Noah Broderson, the state's top-ranked wrestler at 220.  But Hopp rebounded in impressive fashion in the consolation round, beating old nemesis A.J. Maloy of Charles City 9-6 to clinch a spot on the medal stand.The 6-1 afternoon moved the Chickasaws into second place in the team standings.
