NH/TV shows off mettle at Indee tourney

Blockhus wins individual title as the Chickasaws take fourth at Cliff Keen

New Hampton/Turkey Valley got exactly what it wanted — plenty of tough matches  — this past weekend in Independence.

And when it was over, NH/TV coach Nick Hemann was relatively happy as his Chickasaws finished fourth in the Cliff Keen Invitational team standings at the 31-team tournament that included dozens of ranked wrestlers from three states.

“We found a lot of things we need to work on — getting out from the bottom, shot defense and things like that,” he said, “but this is exactly what we needed. The competition — win or lose — makes you better, and we saw great competition.”

Class 3A Fort Dodge won the tournament with 386 points while Missouri’s Christian Brothers College — yes, it’s a high school — finished second with 299.5. Scott West, a power out of Minnesota took third with 287.5 while New Hampton, top ranked in Class 2A, edged Clarion-Goldfield-Dows by four points, 260.5-256.5, for fourth.

The Chickasaws had one champion as senior Michael Blockhus, a three-time state finalist and two-time state champ, went 5-0 and beat Christian Brothers College’s Joshua Saunders 5-3 in a highly-anticipated 145-pound title bout.
