Superlative seniors

Lead Summary

With only a period left in his match against Osage’s Colin Muller, Clayton Taylor was down 9-3.
“I looked up at the clock and I knew I had to do something big, I had to turn him,” said the senior. “He turned me but I got back on top, saw the opportunity, got a half in and got as deep as possible.”
Taylor turned, then pinned his opponent — he also had a fall in a Chickasaw 44-22 win over Decorah — to cap the Chickasaw scoring in a 46-22 win over the Green Devils Thursday.
“That goes to show you should never give up, in wrestling and in life,” Taylor added. “Never give up and stay strong.”
Wrestlers also learned that week that there are more important battles in life, and that not all end the way they want. Money was raised during the night for the family of Caleb Ulrichs of Nashua-Plainfield; Caleb succumbed to leukemia earlier in the week.
And when 50-50 raffle winner Dawn Heying donated her winnings back to the fund, the donation reached $1,200.
By the time the New Hampton/Turkey Valley wrestlers exited the gym that night, it was nearly 11 p.m.
“We had a lot going on here tonight,” said coach Nick Hemann. “Maybe too much, but it was well worth it.”
