Thomas Michael Huegel Dies At 66

Lead Summary

Thomas Michael Huegel, age 66, left his earthly home on  Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, for a greater one with our Lord.
Tom was born Dec. 30, 1949,  in New Hampton to Leo and Ellen (Diederich) Huegel.
On Jan. 25, 1974, he married Jean Brophy at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City.  They were blessed with two daughters, Erin and Mona, into whom he instilled his great love for travel, adventure and history.
There was never a challenge he didn’t accept, including the recent challenge of fighting Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
One of his personal accomplishments was graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in special education.
His interest in computers and data took him to various jobs at Farm Bureau, John Deere and brought him to Sioux Falls in 1983 to work at Citibank.
He later purchased Design Tanks and turned it into a successful company, learning everything he could about fiberglass tanks. He sold and later retired from this business to travel and experience his joy of hunting that elusive deer and pheasant.
He had a zest for life, learning, giving and laughing (that usually came with a strong knee slap).
Tom has been a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, since moving to Sioux Falls in 1983. He served on the Parish Council and was instrumental in fund raising for the Parish Hall.
Tom is survived by his wife Jean; and his daughters Erin Shackett and Ramona Huegel (special friend Seth Miller) and precious grandson Alex Shackett, who loved his Boppa to pieces. He is also survived by siblings, John (LuAnn) Huegel, Jim (Merle) Huegel, Mary Fitzgerald, Bernie (Jane) Huegel, Peg (Bob) Brummond, Ed (Irene) Huegel and Donna Jones; sisters-in-law, Judy Huegel, Bonnie Huegel and Joanne Huegel; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Joe, Jerry and Dan.
Memorials may be directed to Perpetual Adoration Sisters Monastery Fund or Avera McKennan Foundation. There is no way to thank the Avera nursing staff for their love, wonderful care and compassion through this time.
