Wait is worth it for Chickasaws

Lead Summary

Nolan Usher sat on the infield at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School Friday night and tried to muster up a smile.
The New Hampton senior had just “picked off” four runners on the homestretch to place third in the 800 in a season-best time of 2:08.54, which he knew probably wasn’t quite enough to get him to the state track meet.
“If that’s my last run, I’ll take it,” Usher said, “but God, I hope it’s not.”
It wasn’t, for sometime just past noon on Saturday, Usher opened up the list of state meet qualifiers and learned that New Hampton’s 4x800 team — Lance Reicks, Joshua Holschlag, his younger brother Dylan and himself — had made it and will join Noah Fenske, who won both the shot put and discus at Friday’s Class 2A state qualifying meet, in Des Moines this week.
