Walkoff gives Trojans’ winning UIC mark

Lead Summary

For a team that only won two games last year, to finish with a winning record in the Upper Iowa Conference is a definite feather in Turkey Valley’s softball cap this year.
But the team needed a walk-off double by Shayla Kuennen to do it.
After the Trojans lost 6-5 in game one against Clayton Ridge Wednesday, they were down in game two when the Eagles scored five runs in the second inning.
The first game we fell behind early due to walks and errors,” said coach Junior Hackman. “We battled back and had two runners on in the seventh but just couldn’t get the last hit needed.”
Thanks to a home run by Emily Busta in game two — her 10th of the season —  Turkey Valley had one run, then added a pair of unearned runs as Clayton Ridge made some errors in the fifth.
But they were still behind, trailing 5-3 going into the sixth inning.
Kassidy Reicks started that inning with a double, scoring on a single by Jalyssa Blazek for a 5-4 score.
“This time we were able to come back,” recalled Hackman. “In the seventh Jaedyn Winter led off with a single then scored on a double by Emily Busta. With two outs, Shayla Kuennen hit another ball in the gap to score Emily to end the game.”
The 6-5 win put the Trojans at 10-8 in the UIC.
